Proper Sun Exposure

| by , under Wellness

The spring break season is upon us and it's impotent to think about the dangers of too much sun exposure.  Sun protection is at the top of The Woodhouse Day Spas list when it comes to educating our members about the importance of skin care. Not only does too much sun exposure cause wrinkles and saggy skin, age spots and discoloration but also last year alone skin cancer caused 8,400 deaths.  Skin cancer happens to be the most common form of cancer in the U.S.

We're not saying that getting your daily dose of Vitamin D is a bad thing, but it's all about moderation. If you're planning on visiting some place tropical for spring break, here are some tips to help keep your skin safe.

  • Understand your sunblock label. SPF refers to amount of UVB rays not UVA rays that are blocked when applying the lotion.

    • SPF 8 blocks approximately 86% of UVB rays

    • SPF 15 blocks approximately 92% of UVB rays

    • SPF 30 blocks approximately 96% of UVB rays

  • If you're looking for both a UVB and UVA sunblock look on the label for lotions containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

  • Try applying your sunscreen at least 15-30 before entering the sun. Don't forget to reapply your sunscreen after two hours of exposure or after swimming or sweating. Don't always believe waterproof or water resistant sunscreens.  They still need to be reapplied after 40-60 minutes of exposure.

If you notice a change in your skin, schedule a yearly skin screening appointment to rule out any cancerous, pre-cancerous or suspicious moles or brown spots. Watch for any skin changes, especially moles that suddenly increase in size, or change color or shape. In the meantime, don't hesitate to schedule a facial appointment at The Woodhouse Day Spa to continue to keep your skin young and fresh.

If you're spending your spring break at home this year, a visit to The Woodhouse is a great day-away escape! Schedule your appointment online or by calling (260-459-6249).
